Charrington's antique shop (pg 114). It is the month of June, and the weather is warm (pg 124). The room is fairly small, but it is very unique because it lacks a visible telescreen (one is hidden behind the cathedral picture on the wall)(pg 182). It has many relics from the time before Big Brother and the Party, including "an old-fashioned glass clock with a 12-hour face ticking away on the mantlepiece (pg 81)."" There is a fireplace on one wall, with a "deep, slatternly armchair (pg 81)- drawn up to it. On the walls there are a few pictures, including one of a cathedral now in ruins, named St. Clement's Dane (pg 82). An empty bookshelf stood in one corner of the room, and an enormous mahogany bed with ragged blankets in another (pg 81,82,113). I the final corner of the room stood a gateleg table where the glass and coral paperweight that Winston purchased sat (pg 113). There is also a "battered tin oil stove, a saucepan and two cups (pg 114)."" Out the window, which has a muslin curtain (pg 114), a large, older proletariat woman can often be seen doing laundry and singing a tune in the yard, where children can also be seen playing (pg 114). The room is surrounded with wainscoting, and like much of London, it has a rat and insect problem (pg 82,119). .
Book Three starts out in what Winston believes to be the ministry of truth. Almost all of Book Three takes place inside this building. He is in a "high-ceilinged, windowless cell with walls of glittering white porcelain (pg 186) ." Four telescreens are in the cell, one on each wall. A narrow wooden bench runs the perimeter of the room, and there is a lavatory pan at the opposite end of the room from the door (pg 186), which is made of steel (pg 190). Cool white light fills the room 24 hours a day (pg 186), and there is no clock, so Winston has no clue as to what time it is. There is also a low humming sound, which Winston believes is something in the air circulation system (pg 186).
