Family Matters

If you can't stand your outfit, you can just change it. Boyfriends a jerk? Well, there's many fish in the sea. But your family? Even if you fine them weird and embarrassing, clingy and corny, boring and depressing, you"re stuck with them.
When it comes to relatives, sometimes it can seem like everyone else has lucked into a better a better deal than you. If you've got a ton of brothers and sisters and feel like you get no attention, your only-child neighbor seems to have the best deal. Meanwhile, they might feel like their parents way too overprotective and would love to disappear into your house for a while. Or maybe you"re being raised by your grandma or foster parents. So you check you out somebody else's situation and are convinced that life in their family must be better, more normal-more something.
But the truth is, there is no such thing as "normal". Mom and Dad living under the same roof with two kids isn't unheard of, but it's not exactly common either, so you can't look for that formula to define family anymore. Your family members are the people that love you and look out for you-period. But although family represents some really incredible things, everyone has family issued at one time or another. Just living together can be stressful. Add the ususal embarrassments- a brother who hits on all your friends or a mom who thinks she's still a teenager-and it's that much more humiliating because they"re related to you.
It's totally normal to have problems and frustrations, but you need these people. Who else knows all your weird secrets and still loves you? Who claps like crazy for your dinky little five-second walk-on in the school play, or stand up for you when a totally unfair teacher makes your life miserable? You might not realize it sometimes, but your family's probably pretty wonderful in a lot of ways.
Just remember, no matter what kind of family you've got, it is uniquely yours.
