Abortion

Of the numerous American problems in today's society, abortion is without a doubt one of the most culturally significant and opinion-forming. Abortion is a controversial and emotional subject over which people are deeply divided by values and ethics. In the United States, the debate over abortion has led to legal battles in the courts, in the Congress of the United States, and the state legislatures. In the dictionary abortion is defined as the expulsion of a fetus prematurely, when non-viable; miscarriage. The strong demand for termination of the unwanted pregnancy cuts across various social categories. It is voiced not merely by "immoral" woman seeking to erase the evidence and results of their "sin", but also by large numbers of married mothers who, for various reasons feel unable to carry through their present pregnancies. It has spilled over into confrontations, which are sometimes violent, at clinics where abortions are performed. Some believe it is immoral and murderous to abort a potential human. Anti-abortionists label themselves pro-life; they are not just opposed to abortion, they believe that the fetus is a complete, living person deserving, of legal protection. Those in favor of legalized abortion deny that they are pro-abortion, even though it is sometimes necessary. They call themselves pro-choice; they believe that women should be able to decide for themselves whether or not they should bear a child, and should not be subjected to the dictates of the government. In our presentation we will be discussing the regulation of abortion in the United States and other countries, abortion methods and ethical and political arguments Abortion has been practiced around the world since ancient times as a crude method of birth control. There were laws during this time, however, that banned abortion after quickening- that is the time that fetal movement can first be felt. The regulation of abortion differs from country to country.
