Name of the Rose

Name of the Rose, a movie inspired from a well-written novel also titled "Name of the Rose" is an excellent production by 20th Century Fox. Based on the novel, the movie takes place in the year of 1327 in a remote abbey in the northern Italy. The main theme of the movie is based on the church's ideas of preserving the knowledge whereas some logical thinkers oppose this idea and believe that knowledge should be spread in the whole world.
The plot of the movie deals around the mysterious deaths of monks in the abbey and church and other people react to it. The monks in the church believe that the mystical deaths of the people are an act of the devil or punishment of the god for our sins. Whereas, William of Baskerville, a Franciscan monk argued with this idea and tried to investigate about this. He and his pupil figured out that the death is caused by a book which the church has hid somewhere. Due to the poisoned pages in the book people die as they try to turn the pages and put their fingers in the mouth. This way the poison goes into their mouth. The church was against William's ideas and believed in preservation of knowledge. Thus William's ideas and feelings of the church collided. .
The two conflicting forces described in the movie are William's idea of discovering the knowledge and church's thinking of preserving the knowledge. William of Baskerville is a well-respected, studious and Franciscan monk. He is intelligent, passionate for knowledge and a logical thinker. He thinks that more knowledge can lead to more discoveries and more progress and can be helpful to mankind. On the other hand, Jorge of Borges is an old monk who is against everything such as laughter and pleasure. He believes that these kinds of feelings do no give us pain and if there is no pain there is no need of the god and therefore no need of the church. He is very much against the use of knowledge. He and other monks in the church thought that too much knowledge is dangerous and thus they preserved it by keeping so many books in the "secret" library inside the church.
