My Prom

My life is one ironic tragedy after another. I always seem to find myself telling friends stories of mishaps and misfortunes. Even events that should have or could have come out great suddenly have a bizarre and ironic twist to it, as if Murphy had his law tattooed on my head with an invisible ink, so why should my tale of my Junior Prom be any different? Well I"ll tell you, it isn't. I can only hope that my experiences serve as a guide for others like me. .
The first thing that popped into my mind when I decided I was going to the prom was "who am I going to take?" At previous dances I had asked random girls on a dare, but the prom was special, it had to be the right girl. So I turned on my cell phone and looked through my list of numbers. After all, if I didn't have her number already, then I didn't have a chance. My list of girls was at about 20, then I took away all those who lived to far away, my list was at about 15, then I took away all those that I didn't like or that didn't like me, my list was down to about 4. The first name on the list was Ashley, a girl who lived about an hour away. Given her looks, I decided that I could deal with the distance. I called and asked, and to my surprise she said yes. Now I"m not stupid, I knew it was too easy, so I called again about 2 weeks before prom just to make sure our date was still on. At first she was excited about the prom because hers had been great. She kept talking about this guy she met there and how much fun she had had. Then suddenly the conversation took a turn for the worse. Now she wasn't sure if she could go, and when I asked why, she stalled for a few seconds and then said her dad didn't want her to be so far from home. Being the gullible guy that I am, I believed her and asked her to call me when she knew if she could go or not.
A little more than a week had gone by, and I still hadn't heard from her, and by then I had figured out that she wouldn't be calling.
