Exercise and Disease Prevention

Exercise is a vital part of life because it keeps the body and mind in good shape. Exercise reduces stress, lifts moods, and helps eliminate insomnia. It can keep a person looking and feeling younger throughout their entire life, and it also helps build stamina. Many people do not think too much about their health until they get sick or have a close relative pass away from a serious illness. If a person had the opportunity to prevent or improve a serious medical condition, without drugs, one would probably choose that route. Staying physically active and exercising regularly can help prevent or delay some diseases from developing.
One of the benefits from exercise is that it can help a person from developing a heart disease. According to the American Heart Association, coronary heart disease remains the number one cause of death in America (Diamond). Regular exercise helps the heart to become stronger, so it can pump more blood around the body with less effort. Michael Pasquale M.D, a cardiologist in Wilmington, states that exercise is the main factor of eliminating heart disease (Diamond). The best exercises to strengthen the heart are the aerobic ones such as brisk walking, jogging, cycling and swimming. Regular physical activity (even mild to moderate exercise) can help reduce the risk of heart disease. While the total amount of exercise is important, new studies have found that more intense physical activity can lower the risk of heart disease. "Increasing total volume of activity, increasing intensity of aerobic from low to moderate and from moderate to high, and adding weight training to the exercise program are among the most effective strategies to reduce the risk of coronary heart disease in men", says Dr. Mihaela Tanasescu of the Harvard School of Public Health in Boston, Massachusetts (Running). Tanasescu has found that running, rowing and weight training are excellent ways to reduce heart disease (Running).
