Different Kind of Faith

A Different Kind of Faith .
In the story "The Conversion of the Jews" by Philip Roth the character Oscar "Ozzie" Freedman is a thirteen year old boy who constantly questions the Jewish faith. He attends school at the Jewish Synagogue and his teacher is Rabbi Binder. Ozzie is being raised by his mother, Mrs. Freedman who is a devoted Jewish woman. He has no Father since his father passed away. Mrs. Freedman is a small gray haired lady who looks very tired all of the time. She has been called to the school Ozzie attends several times due to what Rabbi Binder considers Ozzie's rebellious ways. Ozzie has a few friends, but the one he confides in most is Itze Lieberman. The point of view character is Oscar "Ozzie" Freedman whose central internal conflict involves choosing either faith or doubt; Rabbi Binder represents faith; Itzie represents doubt.
One side of Ozzie's conflict is faith. In the beginning of the story Ozzie is talking to Itzie about a conversation he and Rabbi Binder had about how Ozzie feels that Jesus Christ is the Son of God and that it was possible that God could create a human being without a woman having intercourse. He feels frustrated because Rabbi Binder never listens to him, he always sticks to what has been passed down over generations. Rabbi Binder states "Jesus is historical" (1). "He is a real person, Jesus, but he wasn't like God, and we don't believe He is God" (1). Ozzie's argument was that if God could create heaven and earth, the fish in the sea and the light, why couldn't he let a woman have a baby without intercourse. " I mean no kidding around. That"d really be nothing. After all that other stuff, that"d practically be nothing" (2). Ozzie believed God could do anything, unlike Rabbi Binder.
The other side of Ozzie's conflict is doubt. Ozzie doubted the Jewish faith and what was being taught to him. Time after time he and Rabbi Binder would go "round and "round.
