Dracula

57). The attraction of the future victims has just begun because Lucy becomes very ill from all the bites. Quincy, Arthur, Dr. Seward and even a specialist Van Hesling do there best to keep her alive because they all love her very much. It is to no avail. This is where her work as the Un-Dead begins. Dracula as her master has retained her power of attraction into the Un-Dead life. Van Hesling tells his friends just how Lucy is to her power of attraction to lure in more victims. "The career of this so unhappy dear lady is but just begun. Those children whose blood she suck are not as yet so much the worse; but if she lives on, Un-Dead, more and more they lose their blood and by her power over them they come to her" (p. 215). She tries to lure Arthur in to kiss her with sweet words and kindness. "Come to me, Arthur. Leave these others and come to me. My arms are hungry for you. Come, and we can rest together. Come, my husband, come!" "There was something diabolically sweet in her tones. . . As for Arthur, he seemed under a spell" (p. 212). Luckily Van Hesling resisted the power and pulled Arthur out of Lucy's trap. .
Van Hesling now comes up with the plan that ultimately destroyed the Un-Dead. His plan was to destroy the source of the evil, Count Dracula. With the four men already there to assist him, Hesling convinces Mina to join in their efforts for the love of her friend Lucy. "In them I find some letters from you, which show how great friends you were and how you love her. Oh, Madam Mina, by that love, I implore you, help me" (p. 180). He would first use Arthur's love for Lucy against her. He convinces Arthur it is him who should do the stake driving " So that my friend, it will be a blessed hand for her that shall strike that blow that sets her free It was the hand that loved her best; the hand that all she would herself have chosen, had it been her to choose" (p. 215). The Un-Dead's power of love and attraction was still very strong.
