Since the age of five, I have lived in the rural town of Greenfield, Iowa. Greenfield has taught me many important experiences about life in the past thirteen years, but nothing compared to what I have encountered in the past six weeks of living in Maryville, Missouri. Although both towns are wonderful places to live, Maryville has many more educational, cultural, and occupational opportunities.
Greenfield's educational program extends through high school, but after high school the best opportunity in Greenfield is to find a job or move to a different town where there is a college. After high school most intellectual students pick a college that they feel suits them for what they want to accomplish. Having no more education than a high school diploma gives little opportunity for graduates seeking decent jobs. Many people that do not move away or attend college end up working in the glass factory, or working at one of the two convenience stores.
Maryville has a high school, but there is also a college that offers undergraduate and graduate programs to receive a degree in a certain field. Having a college degree tremendously enhances the person's chance of getting a illustrious job with a very considerable salary. An employer is mush more likely to hire a person with a college degree rather than a person with nothing more than a high school diploma.
The town of Greenfield is at least 97 percent Caucasian. Out of 319 students that attended Greenfield High School my senior year, only three were not white. Many students that .
I went to school with were racist, mostly because they feared and did not understand the people of the different race. For this reason, coming to Maryville was a very drastic change.
Maryville is more of a diverse town, mostly due to the fact that many of the students who attend Northwest Missouri State University come from many different ethnic backgrounds.
