The New Global Era

Published in 1999, The New Global Era is a concise analysis of the world from the start of the Cold War after World War II in the 1940s, to present day. In 179 pages, the writer condenses a great deal of information about this time period that it is hard to compound into two pages. He talks about events that occurs around the world in the 20th century, summing up in different chapters the important dates, places, and people that affects and causes the Cold War, as well as the aftermath. When you finish reading this book you will find yourself knowing much more about the most recent actions and their effects. I recommend this book for those who want to learn more about the Cold War. The book is filled with pictures, which is always a plus in reading this book. Roberts separates the book into 6 lengthy chapters.
The first chapter, "The Politics of the New World," clarifies about the antagonism between the Soviets and the Americans, who are the dominant world powers at that time of the Cold War. I like how the author makes it clear that the Cold War is a war between the communists and non-communists. I feel that Roberts" transformations of different subjects in the same chapter are very well done; despite the fact that I feel he should have divided the book into more chapters. An example of how he makes this transaction is when he talks about the Berlin Airlift, which was when the Americans flew over Berlin dropping food because the communist side of Germany had wanted to cut itself off from all of the westerners better known as the noncommunist. He then transcends into a new subject about North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). NATO is an alliance with all the western powers. Throughout this chapter he makes sure that we all know his main point is about the Cold War. Roberts puts a lot of emphasis on the importance of the Cold War in history. He goes into depth with the fact that the Cold War involved many and probably the majority of the countries around the world such as Korea, China, India, Pakistan, Cuba, Indonesia, "Indo-China," and of course United States, Russia, and Germany.
