The Waters Edge

I am standing on a rock; my unprotected feet are slipping on the slippery, spongy, mushy moss. A beautiful fish as colorful as a rainbow swims between the rocks in my direction against the current. It swims in harmony alongside a school of fishes, dashing to and fro from left to right in a zigzag formation. I crouch down balancing myself like a tightrope walker against the breeze. The fishes gather round my fish as if telling it a secret. I reach down; my fingers slowly penetrate the water like a hot knife through butter. I can feel a mild wisp of water from its fin on my trembling hand. It must be frightened because it stops moving when I shuffle closer. Then, just like a two-year-old child playing hide- and- seek, it darts away hiding behind a decaying tree branch. Slowly, poking its stunning ruby and violet colored head out from underneath the branch, it looks up at me as if to say can't catch me. I grin, and slowly stand up being cautious not to lose my sense of balance. .
The emerald green seaweed sways back and forth beneath the clear ocean water. The smooth sand underneath, pale as an angels face, ripples with every wave. I take a deep breath, as deep as my lungs can hold. The saltiness of the air blowing over the sea scratches my throat. The mist on my face is as tender as a mothers touch. .
In the distance a seagull, white as a cloud, circles around looking for prey. It tilts its head to the side as it circles around one last time before swooping down. The seagull snatches something from the tranquil ocean waters. I squint my eyes to shield them from the setting sun, not certain of what it has in its mouth. Flapping its wings the seagull gradually makes its way back up into the sky, being attentive not to lose its prize. It seems excited to devour its feast. I stand brokenhearted for this seagull's ill-fated prey was my beautiful fish.
