In Pride and Prejudice, conflict occurs a number of times and it is through these that characters" personality is shown.
Mr and Mrs Bennett share different views about love. When Mrs Bennett knew that Netherfield Park was reoccupied by a rich man, Bingley, she tried to convince her husband to visit him so there might be increased chances for one of her daughters to marry him. Mrs Bennett is a very vain woman and strives to find a good match for each of her daughters, while Mr Bennett is a tolerable man and almost always gives in to his wife.
Mrs Bennett and Mrs Lucas both believe in finding a good match for her daughter/s. Mrs Lucas had once said, "You have character Charlotte, and some men prefer it", in spite of Mrs Bennett. Mrs Bennett was most upset when Elizabeth refused the marriage proposal made by Mr Collins because it meant that Longbourne will no longer be theirs when Mr Bennett died as the estate was entailed to Mr Collins. Before long, Mr Collins proposed to Mrs Lucas" daughter, Charlotte. This created much controversy between Mrs Bennett and Mrs Lucas. Mr Collins is a very vain man and completely adores Lady Catherine de Bourgh, a lady with both integrity and wealth. It seems that he does things to impress Lady Catherine, but once marrying Charlotte, he loses the need to be complimented by her. Charlotte was by then a very old girl and keeping this in her mind, she found every reason to marry Mr Collins, even though she was not entirely happy. She married Mr Collins causing much delight to her mother and great distress for Mrs Bennett. Mrs Bennett was disgusted to see Charoltte Lucas the mistress of Longbourne house.
The biggest conflict in pride and Prejudice was indeed the one between Elizabeth and Mr Darcy. Upon meeting Mr Wickham at a dance, Elizabeth thought him trustworthy and honest but Wickham told Elizabeth lies and untruthful stories about Darcy. This played a great role in Elizabeth formulating her prejudice against Mr Darcy.
