Global Stratification

Before this assignment, I only knew that global stratification was the unequal distribution of wealth, power, and prestige in a global sense causing people to have dramatically different lifestyles and chances within the world's nations. The countries that we worked with I really only knew what I had been taught in my History classes. Of course, I had heard more about Afghanistan and Iraq because of the wars and conflicts we have had these last two years or so. I also knew that terrorism is a huge problem with Palestine, Afghanistan, Iraq and the U.S. We were attacked on September 11th and also in the years beforehand from many Middle Eastern countries. I've never really taken the time to understand the conflicts or the grounds for the attacks. I never thought it was all too serious.
The concept of xenophobia can be found in the National Geographic article. Sharbat explains how she was terrified to have her photo taken at her camp by the photographer. He looked different than her and it scared her. Terrorism is also present since this article deals with the bombings by the Soviets in the 1970's. Sharbat talked about education and literacy in this article, too. She stated how she wanted to have her children go to school because she was so unfortunate as to not have an education as she grew up. The last concept I will talk about that I found in the article was health. Sharbat is said to be in her late twenties, even early thirties and already her skin is aged and worn. This is evidence of poor nutrition. Also, she talked about her child of hers that died very early most likely due to poor healthcare. .
When looking at my data that I collected in lab, I was a little surprised at my results. When it comes to religion, the United States only has 0.8% of its population as Muslim. North and South Korea have 0%. I thought that this religion was more spread out than that. I considered it almost as high as Christianity from as much as we hear of it in the news.
