Osteoporosis

It is unclear, at times, what sample the author is drawing from in making recommendations. The research seems to be somewhat inconclusive, drawing from one source here and another source there. It is difficult to assess the quality of the research, since it is not presented in a consistent scientific manner. Generally speaking, it is harder to follow than the Canadian study, in addition to being less detailed and more anecdotal in nature. It is also unclear what the hypothesis is here; although it seems to involve the idea that calcium should be given to men and women to prevent osteoporosis. .
Reading through the two articles, one is initially struck by the difference in scope. The Canadian researchers pulled from a large body of information to draw their conclusions. They were quite methodical in their approach to the available research, dividing into section committees in order to more closely examine individual studies. In contrast, the author of "Calcium to Treat and Prevent Osteoporosis" is unclear as to what resources he has consulted, beginning his article with "Recommendations" rather than "Methodology." He cites cross-sectional and prospective studies, as well as studies involving patients in clinical trials, but it is not apparent how many studies he has examined.
             Statistical Analysis.
Using various tools of statistical analysis, we can also assess the strengths and weaknesses of the two studies. Inferential methods, by definition, compare the distinction between experimental conditions with the error apparent between replicate observations; so if the difference between conditions is substantially larger than the error expected by chance, the observation can be deemed "significant." In the Canadian study, it is worth mentioning that, where the evidence was inconclusive, the recommendation was based upon the opinion of the committee, as designated by a grade of "D.
