European Influences


            "I wanna be just like Britney Spears!" This phrase is what thousands of young girls are thinking throughout the world. Britney Spears influences young girls to dress sexy and workout to have the perfect bodies. Influence on someone or something can have a negative or positive effect. Britney Spears has a negative effect on girls today by her clothes and attitude. Influence can also have a positive effect. When writing the Constitution, ideas were taken from other sources besides the minds of the Americans. Jefferson, when writing the Constitution, was influenced by Ancient Greece and Rome, Britain, and European philosophers. Ancient Greece and Rome had two ideas of government that impacted the Constitution.
             Before the Constitution was written, America was lead by people who were rich and owned an excessive amount of land. The farmers and merchants had little or no say in the decisions made. The farmers did not want to be ignored and wanted laws that would reflex their lives. Ancient Greece had a similar situation and came up with the idea of a direct democracy. Direct democracy is a system of government in which people vote directly on an issue. Direct democracy was set up so the rich and poor would have equal say in the government. The Americans approved on the idea of direct democracy they got from Ancient Greece but they soon found out that they could not vote on every issue, so they acquired an idea from the Ancient Romans. The idea was the selection of a representative to govern them and make decisions on certain issues. This type of government is called a Republic. Even though the Americans did not like the way Britain was governing them, the Americans still took some ideas from them. .
             Many ideas were taken from Britain but the Americans changed them until it met their aspects. The English Common Law gave the Americans the ideas of courts, juries, judges, and the right to a fair trial in front of a jury.
