Change

Circumstances can influence both positive and negative change. The texts I have covered this year "The picture Of Dorian Gray" by Oscar Wilde, "Prize Giving" and "The Glass Jar" by Gwen Harwood and "The Door" by Miroslav Holub all have circumstances which have influenced self change, some positive experiences causing negative change and some negative experiences causing positive change. .
             .
Circumstances can influence positive change for many, this is especially true for the protagonist Professor Eisenbart in the poem "Prize Giving" the circumstance is the girl shooting the owl, in the Oscar Wilde text "The Picture Of Dorian Gray" it is where Basil Hallward Discusses Dorian Gray's youthful appearance which in turn causes change in Dorian, In the other Gwen Harwood poem "Prize Giving" the circumstance of Eisenbart meeting the flamed haired girl is the circumstance which influences change in Eisenbart, while in the article or satire by flaco, the circumstance is the environmentalist chaining himself to a tree which in turn influences him to change physically. .
             .
In the poem "Barn Owl" Gwen Harwood tells the audience about the above idea about change through the use of language techniques such as short sentences, "I fired" to build anticipation, compound adjectives "angel-mild" to express emotion and alliteration "my first shot struck" to convey imagery to the audience. These techniques bring the audience into the young girl's point of view to show the circumstance, how the young girl wanted her views and thoughts towards life and death to remain the same but when she shoots the owl the change is forced upon her. .
             .
The text "The Picture Of Dorian Gray" also conveys the idea about change and circumstances but in a completely different context. The composer Oscar Wilde used different language techniques such as similes, "like sunlight" to greater visualise the man's beauty being a form of genius, imperative language "live!" which conveys to the audience that Dorian was really pressured into his actions and to also make youth and beauty more appealing.
