The Bike

This clearly parallels Charlie and the bike and is very effective in my opinion because it directly correlates to the theme that she can disillusion her self into thinking that despite the fact that she has to wait she still believes it's worth waiting for. .
Also the point could be made that there was the option of getting it on an "instalment system" which would be easier, this parallels her relationship with Charlie as she could have told him she liked him but instead she "saves up" until he asks her. .
A further example of symbolism used to match Charlie and the bike is in the description used by the author .The writer employs this technique by describing the bike as "a low racer, painted a bright red, with cold gleaming chromium-plated handle bars" and then on Annie and Charlie's first date he describes Charlie as "good looking in a flashy sort of way" and he wears a "scarlet pullover". The writer shows similarities with Charlie and the bike as the bike is new and top of the range and Charlie also appears to be quite flamboyant. There is also the obvious analogous point if the colour's used as Charlie wears a "scarlet pullover" the bike is painted a "bright red". A final comparison that could be made in the context of the writers use of description in that the bike's handle bars are said to be "cold" it could also be said of Charlie's character that he can be "cold" as shown later in the text. He makes use of this technique because it is a short story and for the twist at the end to work the writer needs to leave clues so that at the end the reader comprehends the story .In my personal opinion it is important to my appreciation of the text because this example of the symbolism is much more obvious in certain ways than other examples in the text. .
An additional example of the link between Annie's feelings for the bike and Annie's feelings for Charlie is when Annie actually gets her bike.
