Minutemen and Their World

This is a glimpse of what it was like to live during the colonial period in Concord Massachusetts, the starting point of the Revolutionary War in Robert Gross's book The Minutemen and Their World. Gross takes you inside the lives of the townspeople and follows them as the war progresses and then shows you how they deal with the aftermath. In the book Gross, "sets the Concord Fight, as it used to be known, in the context of the townspeople's ordinary lives, before and after April 19, 1775. It examines how the citizens farmed the land, raised their families, and carried on their politics at the end of the colonial period." The major themes were how people reacted to British invasion, how people reacted to taxes and tariffs, and an overall gist of what life was like in that period. .
Prior to the war, Concord was facing its own battles within the town. They tried not to get involved in the outside world, but to worry about themselves instead. Roads and bridges, schools, and helping the poor were on the top of their agenda. Government affected the daily life of all the townspeople. Political fights were common in Concord and were usually what split the town apart. A road desperately needed by a man on the outer-part of town was a wasteful expense to a man who lived in the center of town. Disputes like this happened all the time in Concord. During the winter months the northern inhabitants of Concord could not make it to the center of town because the bridge was blocked. Since they could not make it to church on Sunday they did not feel like they should have to pay taxes to support the magistrate. To their surprise they were ordered to pay anyway. They started to feel separated from the town and wanted to succeed from Concord and join together with neighboring towns, but Concord refused. The town was becoming divided, this is important when they would finally need to form a militia for the war.
