Exercise Behavior and Adherence

The purpose of this study is to determine the motivational factors that underlie exercise behavior and adherence. In other words, what motivates people to exercise regularly and what could help motivate individuals to begin exercising regularly? The self-determination theory has frequently been considered a useful intervention when studying exercise behavior because it is centrally concerned with motivation and explains several factors and psychological needs that motivate individual's goal directed behavior. I also researched and examined the other motivational factors not included in this theory. The effectiveness of the self-determination theory will be explored as well as comparing its motivational factors to other ones that the theory doesn't include. The study was conducted through a survey questionnaire and an interview process. The survey was issued to individuals found in local gyms as well as other individuals outside of the exercising environment. After completing the survey, only a selected few who noted they were non-exercisers were asked to participate in the interview. The results from this study supported and remained consistent with the self-determination theory. The possible self and social factors were also highly supported. Thus, determining the motivational variables that promote individuals to exercise regularly or to begin exercising can provide a potential intervention to help those who do not include physical activity in their daily routine. .
             Introduction .
Exercise is the biggest contributor to a long healthy life. Unfortunately, as years pass, research finds more and more people who are not exercising regularly. Or as for those solely who do begin to exercise, adherence seems to always become a major problem and concern. People often underestimate the impact exercise can have on their lives. Physical activity, when pursued regularly, is highly beneficial for health, and for physical and psychological well-being (Teixeira).
