Cuba Human Rights

A motion to reprimand Cuba for human rights violations was approved by United Nations Human Rights Commission on Wednesday. However, it was declared a "moral victory" by Cuba's foreign ministry. The motion passed at meeting in Geneva with 22 votes in favor, 20 against, and 10 abstentions. As Wednesday's vote was taking place, Cuban Foreign Minister Felipe Perez Roque spoke before members of the media and all the foreign ministry workers here, saying the countries who supported the motion were pressured by Washington. He said quote "They have been submitted to pressures and blackmail from the highest levels of the United States government, headed by President George Bush, to try to force them to change their mind and vote against Cuba." The Czech Republic and the Untied States were two of the strong supporters of this bill. The moral victory according to Roque was because the United States was forced to threaten countries by cutting of economic aid and medical supplies in order to achieve the vote results the wanted. It was reported that seconds after the vote was announced at the foreign ministry here, there were claps and cheers of "Viva Cuba!" followed by the foreign ministry workers singing the national anthem. .
This article is an example of the continuing battle that is going on between the US and Cuba that has been ongoing since the Cuban Missile Crisis. Here, one can see the US using its influence in the world to get what they want in the United Nations. The aid that the US provides to 3rd world countries is critical to the survival of the country and its people. For the US to have to dig that deep into its pocket to get what it want is a real big victory for Cuba. It shows how the US can't rule the world like it used to in the past. This is Cuba looking on the bright side of things, so that not to discourage its people. This implies that in the future, when the US wants to get something done, it might not have the leverage around the world that it needs to get the job done.
