The Joint Commission - A Higher Standard of Care

The accreditation is a process that never ends, allowing their standards to change with time and evidence. This ongoing survey, allows a unique opportunity to our hospitals and doctors, by providing, a second set of eyes on our processes and procedures; therefore, allowing us to continually better ourselves and our quality of care, for the sake of our patients. .
The organization thrives on the idea of spontaneity, which requires the facilities to be in a constant mode of preparedness. The Joint commission believes that quality care and patient safety are things that hospitals and doctors' offices should be practicing on a day to day basis, and therefore do not require a preparation warning. "Accreditation surveys once were scheduled months in advance. Commission surveyors paged through an organization's notebooks, crammed with minutes of meetings and documents of policies and procedures, and they listened to presentations that had been carefully and meticulously prepared"(2008).The advancing pursuit of high standards should not be something we have to "get ready for", it should be a way of life." .
The surveyors are taking on a more hands on approach to their process. No longer are they hiding behind the doors of the stuffy boardrooms, but they are face to face with not only the staff members but with the patients as well; "Instead they use an active tracer methodology to follow the care of individual patients through an organizations system"(2008). This means, to expect to see them digging into the patients' charts, looking to see that continuity of care and standards of quality are being practiced. They will pick the brains of the staff, looking to see that they are stocked with the tools that enable them to properly care for their patients. .
National Patient safety goals spotlight troubled areas of practice that can possibly produce detrimental outcomes, and offer preventive measures or steps that can lead us in a more positive outcome.
