NAEYC Code of Ethical Content - Position Statement


            The NAEYC Code of Ethical Conduct is a guideline designed to assist early childhood educators and other professionals who work in infant and toddler programs, preschools, childcare centers, family childcare homes, kindergartens, and primary classrooms in issues that pertain to young children and their families. It is composed of four sections that discuss standards of ethical behavior and responsibilities that educators must possess.              The NAEYC Code of Ethical Conduct includes core values, ideals, and principles. The code is broken down into four main sections. The first section refers to ethical responsibilities to children. It discusses how early childhood educators must be dedicated to supporting a child's development, growth, and learning. It is important to remember that childhood is a crucial and valuable stage in one's life. The second section discusses ethical responsibilities to families. Families are of the utmost importance in children's development. .
             The early childhood educator and family have a common interest in mind; they concern themselves with what is in the best interest of the child. It is crucial to develop a relationship of mutual trust with the families that we serve. The third section of the NAEYC code goes on to discuss ethical responsibilities to colleagues. It affirms that a caring and cooperative workplace preserves positive relationships. Human dignity should be respected at all times. Last but not least, the fourth section explains ethical responsibility to the community and society. It promotes offering useful, nurturing and positive educational programs. Among many things, the code calls educators to further community knowledge and their understanding of early childhood education. Educators should also play an active role in forming policies that support early childhood education, as well as lobby against policies that pose a threat to children's best interests.
