Kitty

The assailant did not stab Kitty once and left her to perish; in fact, he stabbed her three times. Kitty cried that she had been stabbed and she needed help the first time she was stabbed. Her neighbors heard the screams but acted as if they didnt hear her. Why didnt her neighbors do anything to help her? Her neighbors could have easily thrown things at the assailant to protect her, and buy her time to escape. Some of her neighbors turned on their lights. The lights frightened the assailant off. If the lights scared the assailant off, and he was not at the scene anymore, why would her neighbors be scared to call the police now? Her neighbors knew she was still out there injured and dying because she screamed that she was; however, they continued to leave her there on the streets to fend for herself. The least her neighbors could do was ask if she was okay. After the lights were out, the assailant then came back a second time and stabbed her again. She once again screamed for help. This was her neighbors' second opportunity to save her and call for help. Due to her second scream, her neighbors knew that the assailant was still around and that she desperately needed help. Instead, they acted as if they did not hear anything and went back to bed.
On the account of Gansberg's essay it seems as though Kitty's neighbors did not care. The testimony of her neighbors gives off this sense of apathy. One man stated that he was tired and he went back to bed. Has he no decency? A human being is dying outside his window and he is too tired to even care to help. How can he sleep knowing someone is being murdered outside his window? "Let that girl alone!" was all one man could say as the assailant was stabbing Kitty. That was all the man did. He did not call for help or came to see if she was well. I wonder whether the man felt his duty was complete. When another Kew Garden resident was asked why she did not call for help, she shrugged and replied, "I do not know.
