Socialism and the United States

S. economy and would be detrimental to the constitutional and moral values on which the U.S. was built. Therefore if the citizens of the United States do not want travel the road that will assure failure they must put an end to this socialist movement.
The surging socialistic movement contradicts the very values on which the United States was established. Now why would the United States want to throw out a system that has functioned exceptionally well for over two hundred years and has been adopted as a model for many nations of the world (Oaks, 2010). As a consequence of shifting toward socialism the United States would be parting its ways with the document that was made by the men considered founding fathers of this great nation. Socialism threatens the very rights of the constitution, just recently President Barack Obama proposed a contraceptive bill that threatened religious beliefs and freedom of the Catholic religion, by trying to force the Catholic church to hand out free contraceptive products to help regulate birth control, which the Catholic church considers against the commandments of God (Peach, 2012). This was clearly a socialistic type attack to weaken the U.S. constitution and give more power to the officials in political power. Also another huge fundamental of the constitution that socialism encroaches upon, is the principle of popular sovereignty. Popular sovereignty is considered has "a belief that ultimate power resides in the people's " (Light & Magleby & Nemacheck, 2011, p.4). Socialism believes in the polar opposite of popular sovereignty and puts all the power in the hands of the government to make the decisions to run the country. The United States cannot afford to make the jump towards socialism, because if they did they would weaken or even abandon the fundamental principles of the constitution, they would betray their own values and also debilitate many nations in the world (Oaks, 2010).
