Self-Actualzation in Their Eyes Were Watching God

Janie Crawford, in Zora Neale Hurston's Their Eyes Were Watching G-d, embarks on a journey towards self-actualization. Hurston, known for her aesthetic language and symbolism, utilizes these traits throughout the book. In describing scenes with Janie's husbands: Logan Killick, Joe "Jody" Starks and Virgible "Tea Cakes" Woods, Hurston's language utilizes symbolism in foretelling what Janie's relationship will be with each of them. Janie experiences many ups and downs throughout the book, but finally she sees the horizon and emerges as the free spirited woman that she has always yearned to be. Janie Crawford's journey is similar to that of a voyage over a long bridge. Each and every relationship teaches her something new and important. Once she crosses over to the other side she finds self-actualization, true love, her voice and the horizon that she has always been looking for. .
The beginning of Janie Crawford's long journey to find her voice, starts when she is forced by Nanny to marry Logan Killick. Janie goes into the marriage void of any love for Logan but with the hope that it would bloom. Logan and Janie's relationship, just like Logan's house, was "absent of flavor" and a "lonesome place" (Hurston 39). Janie attempts to appease Nanny. She agrees to partake in an arranged marriage out of fear that if she didn't, she would follow in the footsteps of Nanny and Janie's mother, both of whom were raped. Nanny wanted the third generation of Crawford's to be different than the prior two. An arranged marriage wasn't required to achieve that. Janie was different. She was a free spirit, unlike her mother and grandmother. She didn't love Logan and although she hoped that the love would grow it never did. She confides in Nanny two months into the relationship telling her that she doesn't love Logan and wants to know if she ever will love him.
