Self-Actualzation in Their Eyes Were Watching God

She expresses how "Ah wants things sweet wid mah marriage lak when you sit under a pear tree and think. Ah" (Hurston, 24). Janie doesn't care about Logan's sixty acres of land, or the amount of money and prestige he has. Instead she wants to experience excitement and blissful harmony and the passionate interaction that she feels while sitting under the pear tree. .
Janie was in an oppressive relationship with Logan. He ultimately angers when he realizes that she doesn't love him. As a result he treats her unkindly and requires her to perform manual labor and to work in the fields. Janie doesn't want to do this. While Logan is away buying a second mule, Janie spies on Jody Starks, who would end up being her second husband. After much fighting between Logan and Janie, Janie leaves him and runs off to the second stage of her journey and marries Jody Starks. Although Janie had a rough first marriage she decides to take a risk and follow her instincts. .
Janie and Jody's relationship is pivotal in Janie finding her voice. This relationship bridges the gap between the young teen that follows what her Nanny tells her to do and the young woman with a strong independent voice. Jody claims to be offering Janie a deeper fulfillment than what she had previously experienced, both physically and emotionally. This is what Janie has been yearning for. He is offering her passage to the far off horizon that she so deeply wants, or so she thinks. Jody "spoke for change and chance." Jody spoke about the future and traveling, which leads Janie to believe that she would reach the far horizon. She thought that she might find that physical and emotional connection with Jody. Despite those desires Janie can't move forward because "the memory of Nanny was still powerful and strong" (Hurston 50). Though Janie's relationship with Jody does not start off well , she leaves it with a stronger voice than she could have imagined.
