The Unsuccessful War on Drugs

This paper talks about a few of the main ideas that arise when talking about the war on drugs here in the United States. The United States government has been fighting against drug organizations to try and maintain lower crime rates and lower the amount of substance abuse. Some people may have no knowledge of what is really going on with the war on drugs and be supportive of it. This paper includes three main ideas that can make a person realize how bad the war on drugs has affected every single citizen, not just the criminals. With the war on drugs being supplied with billions of dollars each year, it has caused the United States to have the highest number of prisoners around the world, approximately seven times more than any other country. Ending the war on drugs and following steps that other countries have taken to decriminalize drugs could have more benefits than continuing this non ending battle. .
The U.S Governments war on drugs has been unsuccessful in trying to reduce the amount of crime that is related to drug law violations in the United States, according to DrugWarFacts.org, causing the nation billions of dollars every year to fight for control and to keep people inside of the prison system. The government's strict laws on drug control has created a very profitable market for organized crime in the U.S. and an even bigger market for organizations in Mexico. Decriminalizing the personal use of drugs, using some of them for medical purposes, or legalizing and taxing it for recreational use like some states have begun to do with marijuana, could benefit the economy by providing more jobs and better rehabilitation programs for those in need. .
Since the beginning of the 1960's, the United States government has been trying to keep strict control over the drugs that are being moved and sold throughout the country to try and prevent more crime and decrease the number of addicts, but according to Steve Rolles (2012) "The first unintended consequence is the creation of a criminal black market.
