To direct these problems the government passed the Food Additive Amendment. The Wholesome Meat Act of 1967 aloud federal laws to require states channel inspections of meat to raise more adequate meat standards. The states were forced to conduct a meat inspection program that would be as substantial as the federal governments. By 1968, the meat and poultry inspection departments joined with the United States Departments Agriculture and Research Service. In 1972, the Animal and Plant Health Inspections was created to control the responsibilities of the Agriculture and Research Service.
