Reasons for Legalizing Prostitution

Although some Americans are calling for the legalization of prostitution in the United States, there are just as many that don't ever want to see it legalized at all. In many cases, prostitution is viewed as a detestable act, something that should be shamed, and ultimately a horrendous crime. Despite the fact that many Americans look down on paying for sexual acts, its been reported that one in five adult men in the United States have paid for sex acts in some capacity, whether that be in the form of online pornography, visiting a strip club, phone sex, etc (Long 1). So while many people outwardly show their distaste towards paying for sexual acts, including prostitution, data seems to suggest that it may be more common and met less met with malice than originally thought. In 1977, sixty-one percent of Americans viewed prostitution as morally wrong. In 2006, this same state had dropped to forty-three percent (Long 3). .
Billy J. Long, Assistant Professor of Criminal Justice at Ferrum College argues that legalizing prostitution in the United States would help to "Reconceptualize the Concept of Demeaning Behavior Towards Women " (Long 3). Long goes on to say that far too often women are viewed as helpless or having no option when it comes to prostitution, while their male clients are viewed as the oppressors who make women their victims. Long argues that if prostitution were ever to be legalized in the United States that the perception of people towards prostitutes and their clients would change dramatically. Women would feel as though their actions weren't degrading, but instead beneficial and uplifting to themselves and to society (Long 3). In addition to women being viewed differently, according to Long, approximately ninety percent of all welfare recipients are women. If prostitution were legalized, this could provide another means of income for women (Long 3). .
Legalizing Prostitution would also decrease crime by a small margin, money spent on fighting crimes involved with prostitution, and provide streetwalkers and private prostitutes safer working environments (Long 5).
