Athletes and Character Development


            
             Athletes need to be taught to act and think correctly every day of their lives. Building an athletes character is important in every sport they participate in. It is the responsibility of the coach to teach, set and hold athletes accountable to standards higher than victory. Coaches teach character and ethical behavior, athletes are not automatically born with it.
             Basketball offers the opportunity to learn sportsmanship, teamwork, ethical behavior, confidence, poise, positive discipline and perseverance. It is considered a shared space sport with subjective judgment involved and has the potential for problems. Subjective judgment comes from referees decisions, coaches input, strategies, substitutions or any outside intervention into the sport. In coaching basketball, my athlete does not have to be good to get good out of the sport. The last person on my squad should be able to benefit character-wise as well as my star athletes. .
             In basketball, teamwork is vital. Teamwork in basketball means that everyone is working toward the same definitive goal. Individual goals are met when athletes are truly working as a team. It's critical for my athletes to work together and help each other. Everyone must focus, work together and fulfill their individual roles for the team. This will also apply to all aspects of their lives. In helping someone else, they will help themselves. Developing strong relationships, respecting others, and showing sincere care to everyone around will take them a long way in life. .
             In basketball athletes need to strive to have a positive and disciplined attitude. This means to stick a basketball workout regime and practice consistently and persistently. We will strive to display a positive attitude and discipline in practice and games, so this positive attitude will carry over to other life events. Attitude will affect their performance in games and practices. Attitude on the courts should be intense, focused, and aggressive.
