Telescope Research Paper

The refracting telescope was one of the first telescopes, but it is not the sole method for viewing the stars. During the 17th century, as an alternative to the refractive telescope, Newton was credited with build the first reflecting telescope. The reflecting telescope does not use a convex lens, but instead uses a very large concave parabolic mirror to gather and focus the light from the object onto a flat secondary mirror which reflects the image out of an opening at the side of the main tube (Sharma, 1). The eyepiece which we look through is in that tube sticking out the side near the top of the big telescope and allows us to see a similar image as produced by a refracting telescope. The refractive and reflective telescope are both popular, but the third and final category is somewhat of a mixture of the two. The Catadioptric telescope uses a combination of mirrors and lenses to fold the optics in order to form an image. The light from the object enters through a correcting lens which acts as the objective, then hits a spherical primary mirror and is reflected back and forth throughout the tube until the image is then formed at the eyepiece (Sharma, 1). These three designs are used for similar purposes but each has its advantages and disadvantages.
The Refracting telescope is clearly the most common form of the telescope since it is so simple and cheap to make. Because it is so cheap and easy to make it can be found in mass circulation among youth astronomers. This design despite its simplicity it is good for viewing distant terrestrial objects, and with a large aperture it is perfect for stargazing. Unlike other designs the sealed tube protects the optical components from damage and from image degrading air currents thus making it a rugged little device (Sharma, 1). Although the refracting telescope has many advantages over its counterparts, it still has limited practical usefulness.
