Breast Cancer Research Paper

[Can12] There are environmental risks that can increase ones chance of getting breast cancer. Environmental risks are not genetic, and can include body size, diet, reproductive factors, and medical treatments. (Laden & Hunter, 1998) As a person ages, their risk of breast cancer will increase. Although breast cancer can develop at any stage in life, older woman are commonly targeted more frequently. Obesity is another environmental factor that increases the chance of getting breast cancer. Obesity is very unhealthy, and disrupts normal functions in the body. Woman who have never been pregnant, or had their first child over the age of 35 increase their risk of breast cancer. Changes occur in the body and breasts during pregnancy, and timing is everything. Lastly, radiation exposure can increase the risk of breast cancer. This is for individuals who underwent radiation treatments to the chest as a child or young adult. [May13].
BRCA genetic testing has pros and cons. I will first discuss some of the pros. An individual who is aware of a family member with a confirmed BRCA mutation may feel helpless and uncertain. Upon receiving a BRCA genetic test with negative results, they can rest assured that there is a relatively low risk of developing breast cancer. If they receive a positive test result, they will be informed of their high risk of developing breast cancer, and begin to take action to prevent it. This is great, because it is imperative that individuals are aware of the genes they carry. I will now discuss the cons. The truth of the matter is that normal test results from BRCA testing may not guarantee healthy genes. Some women test negative for the BRCA 1 and BRCA 2 genetic mutations, but still develop breast cancer. Their disease could be the cause of a mutation or abnormality that has not been identified yet. BRCA testing can also cause depression, anxiety, or anger. Although a positive test result does not fully guarantee a woman will get breast cancer, an abnormal gene will cause them to assume they will eventually develop it.
