International aid is assistance provided to foreign nations in need. Most countries around the world have international aid programs in their governments. As one of the wealthiest countries in the world Canada is pinned between the debates on whether or not Canada should provide foreign aid. Canada should provide foreign aid. Foreign aid develops a country in the mist of it becoming self- sustainable, and as a powerful, wealthy country and part of the United Nations it is our human responsibility to support developing countries. A key goal of providing foreign aid is to help countries that are less fortunate than us and to develop these countries so that they will become self- sustainable in the future. Canada's international assistance is focused on three priority themes in order to support developing countries. They are increasing food security, securing the future of children and creating sustainable economic growth. Around one billion men, women and children around the world suffer from malnutrition and hunger. Canada has a strong record of helping increase global food security through providing immediate food to hundreds of starving people and contributes in creating sustainable agriculture growth in developing countries. If the Canadian government were to not provide aid in food security many people would go hungry and possibly die. Canadians can support and contribute to making a safe and reliable agricultural development for these countries. Without nutritious food the future generation`s chances of living a full life are slim. Today nearly half of the world`s population is under twenty-five years old, and more than ninety percent live in the developing world. Children in these countries are twelve times more likely to die before they reach the age of five. With the help of Canadian foreign aid the government can provide food, healthcare, teach the population how to purify water, teach sanitation and provide a basic education to the youth population.
