Our Reliance On Technology

Many people who did not grow up with technology in their life will say that technology has taken over the new generation and that we are unable to think for ourselves. What they do not understand is how technology has benefited us and them as well. Technology is a part of society that we will never be able to get rid of and whether we like it or not, technology will continue to advance in order to make our lives easier. Growing up I have always been exposed to using technology as a tool and have been taught not to rely on it too much. In the second grade, my mother was no longer a stay at home mother and got hired full time at a local hospital. This meant she could no longer take or pick my brother and me up from school everyday. I remember my first interaction with technology in second grade. About a week before school began, my parents gave my brother his first phone. It was used only to call them and keep them informed as to where we were and what time we got to school. My brother and I would walk home together for the first three weeks, but as he made new friends, he would make me walk home alone so I did not hang out with them. I told my parents about what was happening with my brother and they talked to him about it, but also bought me a phone just in case it continued to happen. The phone's sole purpose was to call my mother, father, and grandma to let them know where I was at all times. It was never used as a social tool to communicate with my friends. .
As a six year old, I did not know much about technology and what I did know was only what my parents showed me. Therefore, I was not very dependent on using my cell phone or computer unless it was for a good reason, like my online Spanish lessons or calling my parents. I would call my mother and father when I left my house in the morning, got to school, left school, and got back home. Thinking back now, age six was a very young age to have a phone, but it was only used to keep my parents informed on where I was.
