Away From Her - Movie Analysis

In a scene where the couple walks through the forest, Fiona kneels down and examines a beautiful bright-yellow flower – a skunk lily. "When I look away I forget what yellow means, but I can look again" (5:22) This scene indicates Fiona's awareness of the memories fading - but she knows that she can "look again" and put bits of what she knows together so that she can remember and hold on to those memories. The forests signify the complications of dealing with the issue. Grant is finding it difficult to accept Fiona's condition, while Fiona is quickly accepting and facing it with no issues, hence the contrasting emotions between the two of them. The clusters of trees represent obstacles that Grant must face in order to find an open space to be peaceful in. Contrary to Grant, Fiona has no trouble finding her way around the clusters of trees and is able to find her own empty space within the forest. The snow blankets represent a fresh path; Fiona is able to explore and make new trails while Grant is only trying to keep up with her by following them. He is unable to start a new path and look at the issues in an optimistic way. .
The nursing home acts as the beginning of the couple's stages of drifting apart. Although the location of the nursing home is not far from their cottage home, the emphasis put on the amount of natural light it receives refers to the isolation of patients from their family members. It seems as if the nursing home was put into an area that looks very bright and fresh with all the natural lighting but on another level it represents the loneliness the patients must feel because they don't have someone there with them that can fully understand what they try to do or say. There is a scene in the film where Grant observes the patients from having company, to being alone at the end. It may seem very festive and exciting but as the day goes by people leave and at the end of the day it's just you.
