Cy Young

The Cy Young Award recognizes the best pitchers from both the American and National Leagues in the MLB every year. Though it is an important award, not many know about Cy Young himself and what he accomplished to have the honor of having an award named after him. This provoked my interest in learning about Cy Young and how he was the first dominating pitcher in baseball.
After growing up on a farm in Ohio, Denton True Young started his baseball career in Canton in the Tri-State League. It was not long before he became known as Cy because his fastball was thought to resemble a cyclone because it was so fast. After having a 15-15 record, he went to the Cleveland Spiders for $500 at the age of 23. He made his debut against Chicago and won 8-1 with a three hitter. He soon became recognized as a great pitcher. In 1901 Cy was offered a $600 raise to his $2400 a year by Ben Johnson to move to the Red Sox. Ben Johnson was forming the American League.
The most striking aspect of Cy Young's career is the statistics. In his 22 year career he threw three no hitters. The first against Cincinnati in 1897 in which CY walked one batter. His second was a perfect game against the Philadelphia A's. The interesting thing is that he was so concentrated on doing his job that he did not even notice he hadn't allowed one base runner the whole game until an outfielder presented him with the last ball of the game. His third no hitter was thrown at the age of 41 in 1908. He helped himself out with three hits of his own and allowed only one baserunner on a walk.
"I had a good arm and legs," Cy once said. "When I would go to spring training, I would never touch a ball for three weeks. Just would do a lot of walking and running. I never did any unnecessary throwing. I figured the old arm had just so many throws in it, and there wasn't any use wasting them. Like for instance, I never warmed up ten, fifteen minutes before a game like most pitchers do.
