The story of Star Wars is very simple indeed; it is a tale of good versus evil set against an outer space backdrop. The spirit of Star Wars lies within Luke Skywalker's quest to battle evil. So when two droids carrying a message from Princess Leia Organa are sold to him, his life changes forever. Obi-Wan Kenobi, a Jedi Knight, convinces Luke to join the droids and him on a mission to rescue Princess Leia. They acquire the services of a cynical smuggler, Han Solo, and his co-pilot, wookie Chewbacca. Together they fight Darth Vader's malignant crew and seek to put an end to the evil empire.
The story is a retread from past stories but perhaps the success of the film lies in the familiarity of the narrative. Lucas" vision was certainly influenced from a number of sources as "writing Star Wars, George Lucas was influenced by the theories of Joseph Campbell about mythic archetypes". (Hood 2001: 38) Lucas had read the Campbell's book Hero of a Thousand Faces in college and rediscovered the book while re-writing Star Wars. .
Campbell's enormously influential book defines the Universal Myth as a structure, which underlies stories told all over the world since the beginning of recorded history. This blueprint for The Hero's Journey gave Lucas the focus he needed to draw his sprawling imaginary universe into a single story. (Brennen 2001) Lucas was so grateful for Campbell's work that he invited the author to his ranch to watch the films with him. Campbell himself said, "certainly Lucas was using standard mythological figures." (Campbell et al. 1988) So once we have established where Lucas drew inspirations from, we can detail the film according to the structural approach. .
In the beginning a command or rather a message is sent on the droid Artoo-Detoo, by Princess Leia, asking for help. The message is specifically for Obi-Wan but is played in front of Luke, this calls our hero to adventure. Luke wants adventure; he doesn't want to stay on his home planet Tattooine forever, so this proposal seems the most natural thing to do.
