Children and Social Media

            Children under 13 have accounts on social media sites like Facebook and Twitter, and their parents do not even know because they are hidden behind a username that is not their actual name or their parents do not have an account on that site to check up on their child. When a child has a social media account behind their parents' backs it is usually because their parents told them they can not have an account on that site because they do not want them to encounter anybody that can cause trouble. Children under the age of 13 should not have the accessibility to a social media site without parent consent because it can put them in danger without knowing it, parents can help you see how fake a person be over the Internet, having a social media account and allowing private information to get out about yourself can give predators the information they are looking for to harm you, and people on social media sites are not always who they say they are.
             Children are naive when it comes to maneuvering social media accounts. Children can be exposed to mature content without noticing what it is. Social media sites were made to encourage adult behavior and adult content instead of child behavior and making ads safe for children's eyes. Parents need to be very mindful when signing their underage child up for social media sites even though their underage child should not have a social media account. Parents should be observant of their child's Internet usage and see if they are being honest about whether or not they have an account without their permission. People do not read the requirements of the website. "The social media giant Facebook says kids have to be 13 to get an account. Join the debate as many parents and even more kids disagree with the guidelines, many violate them, most follow the rules, while still others think that even waiting until 13 isn't long enough" (HubPages). Most social media sites have an age requirement of at least 13 years old.
