Blue-Collar Workers

A blue-collar person is a working class person who often performs manual labor. People often assume that blue-collar workers are less educated, therefor making them less intelligent. Mike Rose was raised in a family of blue-collars, or working class people. Both of Rose's parents barely had educations. Rose's mother and father both were early dropouts. Rose grew up watching his mother wait tables, and learned early on that the average Joe and blue-collar worker carried an important set of skills. Those skills may not have been ones that you would achieve at an Ivy League college, but they were necessary to fulfill the average job and proved to be more difficult than one would assume. .
Rose educates us on those necessary skill sets when he expands on his mother's career. He starts to use logos by telling us about when he would watch his mother work when he was a child. From a back booth at the diner he would watch as she worked the room with plates stretched up her arm and drinks in each hand (Rose 226). His mother's skill sets were pertinent to her job, and she was great at it. He quotes his mother saying she learned to, "work smarter," and to, "make every move count" (Rose 226). Rose tells us how his mother did just that, by using memory tricks and being observant to her customers and colleagues so she knew how to act around them. Rose uses ethos when telling us about his mothers work ethics and skill sets by talking about how she solved problems by taking into account the emotional state of her co-workers and customers (Rose 226). His mother was aware of her surroundings, including the moods of those around her. Rose is giving his mother credibility as a good waitress, also showing how her skill sets prove useful in the everyday world. His mother knew that if she paid enough attention to people moods then she would know how to approach them best. This helped her when trying to get orders out quicker and helped her to get better tips with customers.
