My Birth Reflection

She ordered an ultrasound when I was about 38 weeks to get an idea of about how much my baby would weigh. They determined that my son, if born on his due date, would be 10-11 pounds. She suggested that we try to induce labor a week early to avoid caesarean. I was leery about having another induced labor, I had a Pitocin induced labor with my first son's birth and it was horribly painful. After discussing it at length with my husband we decided we would do the induction to avoid caesarean, but did not want to have Pitocin, I asked for the Cervidil instead. It seemed like a less invasive way to speed up labor and I figured since it was my 3rd birth that it wouldn't take long. I did, however, explain that if for some reason the Cervidil didn't work that I was going to cancel the induction and wait for natural labor. .
On May 2nd, at around 7 am they placed the Cervidil in my cervix. I had some contractions but nothing significant. When the nurse checked me after 4-5 hours I hadn't dilated and she said that she couldn't feel his head in the birth canal they decided to an ultrasound and discovered that my son was in transverse position and that his butt was down not his head. They wanted to immediately schedule me for a caesarean. We decided we wanted to wait and see if he would turn head down on his own, rather than schedule the C-section.
About 12:45am on May 9th my water broke after I got up to go to the bathroom, we went to the hospital after I showered the water was clear and there were no signs of meconium. I noticed that a lot of water was still coming out when I was upright so I had a feeling that he was still butt down instead of head down. When we got to the hospital our fears were confirmed and we learned that he was still butt down. I pled for them to try to manually turn him, but was told that because of malpractice insurance that they don't do that anymore. The nurse began to prep me for a caesarean on my third and last son.
