The Three Kings a Day Celebration


For centuries Puerto Ricans haven been celebrating. January 6 was kept as the physical birthday in Bethlehem because some of the Christians adopted Christmas day, December 25, as Jesus birthday. It is still celebrated as a national holiday in Puerto Rico because it became tradition from families to families. A lot of Puerto Ricans celebrated this beloved holiday even people who visit the Caribbean island can join in on the festive. Three kings day is mostly celebrated your family in their homes. Now it's came be celebrated with strangers as well because of the festival Puerto Rico has annually starting 30 years ago.
             A few days before January 6 the children write their letters to the Wise Men, or to their favorite king to Melchor, Gaspar, or Balthazar, asking for the kings for presents the children would like to get.  The parents get balloons. Many balloons that are filled with helium, so when the kids can attach their letters to them. When they finish attaching the letters to the balloon on the string, the parents let the balloon go and watch it fly away with their kids, all the way up to the sky, carrying the letters the children have written. After that they go and take care of the animals if they have any by cleaning and leaving food for the animals to eat. .
             On the eve of January 6, the children would go and gather grass, hay or straw with water to put into shoeboxes for the three kings horses or camels and place it under the bed when they are going to sleep. They also set out cookies for the three kings. The reason for the shoebox and cookies are because the kids are told that the three kings were going to make long journeys and that the horses and camel they arrived on, had to be fed or refreshed. When the child has fallen asleep the mother or father go in and put the gifts that were asked for under the bed and remove the shoebox and hide it. When the kids wake up the next morning.
