In the article "Video games can be helpful to college students," Scott Carlson argues that video games are a positive part of college students' lives. According to the study conducted by Pew Internet and American Life Project, researchers provide lots of figures and evidences about how this generation of college students is affected by the Internet as well as video games on various aspects of daily life. The objective of this report is to understand how college students use video games, and to demonstrate that video games, in spite of their drawbacks, do make an indispensably positive role in college students' social lives. In this study, to clarify those goals, first of all, the researchers circulated the paper surveys among random 1000 students at a wide range college and university across the United States. As stated in the report, 65 percent admitted that they usually played video games in their pastime, and most of them explained that video games helped them develop and build friendship. Besides, 60 percent said that games killed their pastime when they were alone. Secondly, the researchers surveyed the problem based on the genders. Surprisingly, lightly less men than women reported playing computer and online game, while about the same number of men and women reported playing video games. The reason was because men play video games are generally interested in action and adventure which are often more violent, and view them as their standard part of entertainment;whereas, women prefer computer/online games which are typically traditional and they use them to kill time. Third, the researcher discussed whether gaming interrupts college students' from study or not. Half of them agreed;however, other argued that video games had no effect on their college performance.
In my opinion, I think although abusing video games can bring drawbacks to study and life, video games still are a vital and positive part of college students' social lives.
