Cathedral by Raymond Carver

Throughout the story, he is battling his own stubborn pride and ignorance to allow the blind man into his home. This is a battle of the man growing into a better man, learning the ability to see past what is right in front of him and to understand what he is looking at. This compares to my life event simply because joining the military changed me into who I am today. I believe I learned to be more respectful towards those around me. I learned to accept what others believe in and how they think. I had to overcome my own stubborn pride to be able to work with everyone I'm with to. This has continued to affect me to present time. Now, flying missions overseas, we have to put our differences aside because it is life or death in most situations. We have the same mission and goals to accomplish, so we get it done. I even have to learn to respect and accept the non-combatant civilians of the middle-east and learn how to work with them. .
             The biggest symbolism shown in Cathedral in my opinion is the drawing of the cathedral towards the end of the story. The husband and Robert drawing this cathedral together to me symbolizes that two completely different people are coming together and bonding through their differences. This also symbolizes the husband growing and learning. The husband can now sort of understand what it's like to be blind, but to also visualize something in his mind and put it to paper without actually seeing it. When joining the military, I believe symbolism is shown when you take your Oath of Enlistment. "I (state your name) solemnly swear that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; and that I will obey the orders of the President of the United States and the officers of those appointed over me, according to regulations and the Uniform Code of Military Justice.
