SQ3R and Improved Retention

It is a common belief that an efficient method of study is important for most students, especially for new college students. Here comes SQ3R, the method was put forward by Francis Pleasant Robinson in his 1946 book Effective Study, based on principles documented in the 1930s (Robinson, 1946). The SQ3R strategy has five steps and it can be introduced as Survey, Question, Read, Recite, and Review; moreover, it is perhaps one of the oldest and most widely implemented study strategies (Lipson & Wixson, 2003). It is an active reading exercise that is designed to help you get a fuller understanding of your reading materials. The SQ3R combined with the note packet complement can enhance learning quality, and there are significant relationships between text reading and overall collage grade point average, that is to say, good learning strategies such as SQ3R improve retention.
Firstly, there are significant relationships between text reading and overall collage grade point average. Robinson originally devised SQ3R to read college textbooks in a systematic way, and thus remember the important information (Robinson, 1946). We all know that the successful learning of course content begins with completing course readings. Related to the students' problems in comprehending the text, SQ3R seems to be a potential solution as it provides the students with a structured reading strategy which can help them comprehend the text. For example, the students who completed two hours study sessions per chapter followed a study guide, and finished sample exercises thereafter, usually performed better on test than other who does not spent the time of reading textbook.
             (Chastain & Thurber, 1989 ). .
Similarly, Taraban and colleagues (2000) found that students who implemented a reading strategy gained higher grades. In brief, all these findings that applying a stipulated approach to reading textbook and other course material enhances student recall and consecutive exam performance.
