The Pursuit of Nuclear Technology

Some people look at nuclear technology positively, as an efficient source of energy for the future. It has been brought to attention that the usage of nuclear technology has been practiced safely, but is it really that safe? While precaution measures can be taken, accidents are still bound to happen in the future. A nuclear accident can be extremely harmful to mankind both in the long and short term. Similarly, if nuclear weapons are misused, it can bring about as much danger. The destruction that nuclear technology has caused over the years still remains fresh in the minds of most people. The all-time-famous Kashiwazaki-Kariwa Nuclear Power Plant accident in 2007 is just one of the many life-threatening nuclear accidents that happened. Nuclear technology may be useful, but it can be extremely dangerous. Life-threatening nuclear accidents and highly-destructive nuclear weapons that threaten security in the world, outweighs the benefits it can bring for mankind. Thus, the pursuit of nuclear technology is undesirable in today's world.
The pursuit of nuclear technology is undesirable as it can lead to the development and misuse of nuclear weapons, which can easily result in large number of deaths. A nuclear weapon such as a fission bomb, can not only wipe out numerous lives instantly, but also release harmful radioactive material which stays within a large perimeter. These harmful radiation can cause radiation sickness and birth deformities upon cell mutation. One of the famous event involving the use of nuclear weapon would be in World War II, when the united states of america first unveiled the might and destructive capacity of nuclear weapon by dropping two atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in Japan. Thousands of lives were lost and the effects of radiation on people living there today is still present. Furthermore, rogue countries like North Korea refused to conform to the treaties and agreement established by the United Nations to protect peace and place controls on the proliferation of nuclear weapons.
