Child Labor in a Modern Age

Unfortunately this law has done very little and many governments fail to enforce child labor laws. The Indian government has opened up more educational and job opportunities in struggling parts of the country. By doing this, the government hopes for families to see the opportunities and take this option instead of sending their child off to work.  .
             There are several factors that cause child labor. The main cause is poverty (History of Child Labor). A child put into a work environment at such a young age is forced to mature faster than a normal child. Many times the conditions they are put in are dangerous and accidents are common. Many accidents occur in the factories, the most common being a lost finger that gets caught in a machine. Many employers prefer to use child labor because it is cheaper than hiring adults. On average child laborers are paid half the wage as adults. Employers believe that children can do the work better and more efficiently than adults. Children can also work longer shifts than adults. They are also less likely to complain about bad working conditions, and are able to do certain jobs that adults cannot. Many children in India work in the rug industry because they have smaller fingers than adults.
             The companies might think that hiring at such a young age is a good idea but in the long run it will hurt the country. The early life of a child is supposed to be going to school to receive an education so they can succeed later in life. Along the way they will learn certain skills from their parents that help them to be successful. If they are forced to work in a factory at such a young age then they will be poorly educated when they grow to be an adult. Eventually there will a large group of adults that enter society after working in factories their whole childhood. They will have a hard time trying to do other jobs outside a factory because they are so accustomed to that environment.
