These employees follow standard procedures with a strict adherence to hierarchy and well-defined individual roles and responsibilities. Those in competitive environments, such as sales, may forgo strict hierarchies and follow a competitive culture where the focus is on maintaining strong relationships with external parties. In this instance, the strategy is to attain and maintain competitive advantages over their competitors. The collaborative culture is yet another organizational way of life. This culture presents a decentralized workforce with integrated units working together to find solutions to problems.
             Therefore, according to (Handy, 1993, p.180) " Anyone who has spent time within any variety of organizations, or worked in more than two or three, will have been struck by the differing atmospheres, the differing ways of doing things, the differing levels of energy, of individual freedoms, of kinds of personality. For organizations are as different and varied as the nations and societies of the world. They have different cultures – sets of values and norms and beliefs – reflected in different structures and systems". Additionally, while organizations are being reified, they are also being anthropomorphized. As a result, it is important to understand why the concept of motivation cannot be isolated from organizations for without the people within organizations, organizations bear no purpose. .
             Motivation is "the creation of stimuli, incentives and working environments that enable people to perform to the best of their ability. The aim of motivation is to give people what they really want most from work. In return, managers should expect more from people, in the form of productivity, quality and service" (Chartered Management Institute, 2008).
             Essentially, this essay draws from the prescribed text, in addition to relevant academic literature in order to present a discussion as to how organizational structure and culture may influence the motivation of individuals in organizations.
