Looking Backward: 2000-1887 by Edward Bellamy

Leete discovered the chamber when he was planning to build his new laboratory. Doctor Leete continues to explain how prosperous and efficient economy and society is now a days. Instead of a private capital it is a public capital. At this time it is not only like this in Boston, but the whole country. The nation itself manages all the capital, and war is not a problem because the government's main purpose is to protect the people from hunger and poverty. There are many regulations and rules that are followed by everyone, and no one tries to avoid them. For example every citizen starks working at 21 and stops by age of 35.  .
Now, all the producing and distribution of goods and services is done within the nation. At the end of each year the surplus credit is given back to the nation and every citizen gets a credit card with their fair share. Another thing that makes this a perfect society is the balance in work. Every citizen is expected to do the same amount of work and give their best according to their ability. Julian is very shocked by the system and, like many of the 19th century citizens of the time, and wonders why people would work so hard to earn the same pay as the man next to him. He doesn't seem to get the importance of the community to be superior to that of the individual. In this 21st century society honor is a main sense of motivation. Since there are no wars, the heroic acts of military men are not the highest honor. Working hard for the nation brings greatest pride and self-worth. Leete also explains that there are rewards and punishments for excellent work and failure to do work. Julian is surprised to learn that those who cannot work till earn the same as others, and Leete replies that everyone benefits from each other. .
One day Julian goes to the distribution center with Edith.  After inspecting an astonishing variety of samples, Edith gives her order to the clerk, who transmits it by vacuum tube to Boston's central storehouse.
