Traffic in the Kathmandu Valley

             2.1 Problems of Traffic Management.
The traffic management is a very demanding task. Especially in cities like Kathmandu, where the population density is high, roads are narrow and the traffic volume is huge, it is always a very demanding task for the traffic police to properly manage the situation. The main reasons for difficulty in traffic management can be pointed as follows:.
             .
             i. Unmanaged footpath business.
The open business in the footpath around places like Kalanki, Ratna Park, Baneshwor, Koteshwor, etc. has affected the traffic management to a serious extent. Pedestrians find it difficult to walk and there is a long queue of people in the footpath waiting for their turn to walk or cross the road.
             ii. Roadside parking.
The motorbikes that are parked on the side of the road occupy a lot of space. Other vehicles cannot pass with ease as there is a risk of hitting the parked motorbikes. .
iii. Under use of traffic lights.
The traffic lights that are installed at various places are not in a working condition. They are often kept out of service and even when used, they are not effective.
             iv. Absence of Sky Bridges.
Sky Bridges are known to be safest ways to cross the roads. But absence of sky bridges in places like Baneshwor, Tripureshwor, Thapathali, etc. creates a feeling of insecurity among the pedestrians. Accidents are often caused while crossing the road.
             v. Traffic at peak hour.
The volume of traffic at the beginning and ending of office hours is comparably huge to the normal hours. This problem of higher concentration at the period of peak hour compels the vehicles to wait a long period of time at that point.
             vi. Too many cross roads.
There are a lot of junctions inside the valley where the vehicles pass from four directions. The traffic police can only allow two lanes vehicles to pass at a time and the others need to wait a considerably longer time to wait for their turn.
             vii. Avoiding traffic rules.
Vehicles (especially motorbikes) have a high tendency to avoid the traffic rules.
