Communicating music

             Two bands that I have been interested in are the "Newsboys" and "Paul Wilbur". They both sing about the same thing; however, the way they convey their message in their music is very different . This is done both stylistically as bands and expressed differently in their lyrics.
             Both the Newsboys and Paul Wilbur are Christian artists (meaning they sing "Christian" music or from sacred text). They sing songs about and for God; sometimes they even sing prayers they have written to God. In spite of this, they write their music in different ways. The Newsboys band is much more performance oriented, while Paul Wilbur makes it evident that he is leading his audience in a worship "service", that is actually singing to the heart of God. The Newsboys are a band from Australia that bring life into their music using a fun pop rock easy going sound that is very energetic. In contrast, Paul Wilbur's band is from Chicago; he believes that his destiny in life is to help Jews realize that Jesus was their savior. So he sings songs about Israel turning back to God.
             Now the style's that these artist enjoy playing is drastically different. The Newsboys draw their music style from what we call "rock and roll" (which began in the United States in the 1950's, it has evolved to this day and branched out in many different directions). Rock is largely defined by it's repetitive melodies and it's hard driving backbeat. The music is structured with a chorus refrain; during the course of the song, it will continually go back to the chorus and repeat that section of the song several times. On the other hand, Paul Wilbur, uses more of a sectionalized approach; his songs repeat some things, yet they generally tend to change and evolve as the music goes. Respectively, Paul defines his music through Klezmer style. Klezmer style is a music genre that has become associated with a Jewish style of music. It is looked at as an insult in some cultures, it is not taken very seriously.
